Large...Faerie Blemished...Rosewood thumb piano, 5" x 7", 17 steel keys and two vibrato holes on the back. The thumb piano originates in Africa. It is also known as the mbira or likembe. The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber. To play, rest the thumb piano on the fingers of both hands and hold it between your palms. Cover the vibrato holes with your fingers. Then pluck the keys with your thumbs. As you play you can un-cover and cover the vibrato holes as you like. Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. Specific tuning of a thumb piano is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning. Otherwise, the tuning is subjective and should only be pleasing to the player. The longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches. Measures 33 1/2 inches long by 5 inches wide and 2 inches high. Most early dulcimers had a strictly diatonic scale; that is, the frets were placed so as to produce a major scale (do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do) with no extra half steps.

BLEMISHED...PALOMA BRAND from Mumbai. We have included this beautiful SANTOOR (16/15) as a compliment to our Renaissance collection of instruments. The Santoor likely originated in Persia and was introduced throughout Europe by traveling musicians. The SANTOOR has 16 left and 15 right courses, the shorter strings producing the higher pitched notes. Each string can be individually tuned, and while the strings run in courses of three, each course is generally tuned to the same note. The courses run over movable wooden bridges.
The Bridges alternate left-right-left-right down the soundboard, thus the playing surfaces are raised, alternately, right-left down the soundboard. The raised playing surfaces are struck with light wooden hammers, much as is the case with Hammered Dulcimers. The Santoor is usually played when seated, but can be mounted on a Hammered Dulcimer stand, sold separately.

This MOSAIC inlaid Oud has the classic tear-drop shape. Solid staves are used in the construction of the bowl and neck. The back of the body, neck and peg box are all FULLY DECORATED with simulated Mother of Pearl inlay. The three Rosette sound holes on the soundboard are rimmed by simulated Mother of Pearl inlay. Decorative patterns will vary, but they are all gorgeous! BEAUTIFULLY ADORNED, this Oud has 12 strings in 6 courses (nylon and nylon wound). The soundboard has a light finish. The nut to bridge measures approximately 24". Overall dimensions are approximately 32" x 15" x 8". This Oud includes extra string set, Oud pick and a case! The case had 3 locks and a hand grip. It is vinyl outside and cloth inside.

The classic elegance of the famous Egyptian Tear-Drop Shaped Bowl is more than evident here. The Bowl and Neck Stave are constructed with alternating light and dark hard woods. Traditionally played with 11 strings, it may arrive strung with 12, the 12th string being removable at your option. he three round sound holes have decorative rosette inserts and are trimmed with faux mother of pearl inlay. The soundboard has a light finish. There are eleven strings. The bridge is fixed. The nut to bridge measures approximately 23.25 inches. This is a beautiful instrument. Made by the Zeynel Abidin family in Turkey who are well known for their remarkable Ouds, Cumbus and Saz making. This little "pocket" mandolin is well worth the cost. Finished in a high gloss with a flat-backed pine body and sporting a mahogany stain, this mandolin is an easy size to manage. About 25 inches in length and just under nine inches in width.
The finished, laminate spruce soundboard has an arched top with internal bracing. The fret is directly below the nut, thus giving it a "zero" fret. The strings rest on the fret, creating a very low action. Four Courses of two strings each. The four lowest strings are wound metal and the higher four strings are non-wound metal. The strings should be tuned G-D-A-E, low to high. If you decide to switch out the strings at some point to light gauge mandolin strings, then on the 12 inch scale you can tune it as if it were are rare, piccolo mandolin at C-G-D-A...an octave above a Mandola and a fourth above a regular mandolin...producing truly unique sound.
The bridge is movable, or "floating" and we do not always ship it with the bridge in place to prevent damage in certain circumstances...you can place it where it is most comfortable for you. Typically, you would place the bridge by measuring from the top (zero) fret to the 12th fret, the repeat the distance from the 12th fret to the bridge placement. We include a soft travel case too! Finish color and decoration style may vary from photo. The Harmoniums are tuned to A = 440 (Hz) within 5-8 cents; rarely are they off by 10 cents. A cent is a unit of measuring intervals in music. Each half step (semitone) is made up of 100 cents. The 440 (Hz) represents the frequency of sound wave for the "A" note. If you double the frequency, you play the A an octave higher.
"Scratch & Dent" or "Blemished" products are denoted by a "-2" after the product code. They are New and Unused but are considered Second Quality. This means that there is some esthetic irregularity. The irregularities may include, blisters in the shellac finish, stains, scratches or dents, discoloration in the wood or finish, rust or pitting on metals, imperfect glazes, manufacturer's repairs, or some other mark on the surface. The irregularity does not affect the playability or sound quality of the instrument. This is instrument was introduced to India by the British. It has been embraced and is now a truly Indian instrument used as accompaniment in devotional songs. The reeds in the harmonium are tuned to sound well together, not necessarily with other instruments. As such they are not in concert pitch and are not meat to be. As with many Indian instruments the key for the music is selected to best suite the vocals, or to set a mood. Traditionally, Harmoniums are usually higher pitched if compared to the Western Scale. Harmonium tuning does not reflect the Western Scale and is not meant to. The blemish does not affect the sound or playability of the instrument.

The Harmonium has become a very popular instrument in Celtic, Indian and other music. It is used to accompany singers, as a solo instrument in performances, and for meditational accompaniment.

The trade off is that the design of the traveler harmoniums results in the air chamber being less air tight as compared to the design of the fixed harmoniums; so expect some air loss.
