 A LITTLE ABOUT UILLEANN BAGPIPES... Uilleann (pronounced simply: ill-in) Bagpipes, are most often referred to as Irish Bagpipes. The Uilleann Pipes differ from Traditional Bagpipes in the method by which the air reservoir is filled. Rather than blowing directly into the bag through a mouthpiece, the bag is filled by pumping a bellows with the player's elbow. Thus, "Uilleann" translated means: "Elbow". Once upon a time, Long Ages Ago, a law was passed that classified traditional bagpipes as instruments of war and thereby banned them. After all, The Scots and Irish both tended to be lead into battle by their respective Bagpipers and in the movie, BRAVEHEART, a direct reference to this fact was made! So, it is thought that the Uilleann bagpipe was invented as a response to the law. These pipes cannot be played while standing, let alone when marching. Rather difficult to lead the men into battle while sitting! The Uilleann Pipe player must be seated to play these pipes. They also produce a much quieter and more mellow sound, better suited to indoor events such as weddings or wakes! Speaking of wakes, when they wanted some especially good Irish bagpipe music for the soundtrack of the movie, TITANIC, they used UILLEANN BAGPIPES! These are our own pipes. We are all musicians here and our products reflect our music dedicated lifestyle. These take around a year to build, sometimes a little more, sometimes less. Unless you buy one we have in stock, which happens once every couple of years, this is a custom, made to order item, for you and not cancelable . Delivery time varies from 30 to 80 weeks, most of the time. Orders cannot be canceled. Worth the wait and they are made for YOU! If you have NEVER PLAYED THE UILLEANN PIPES, we will not knowingly sell you a full set. There is no chance you will be able to start learning with a full set. You would absolutely need to close off the air valve from the practice set and not use the half and full set portions for six to nine, or more, months. These have no learning curve improvement for those pipers who can play the GH pipes well. These are very difficult to learn. Even if you order a half set, you are not going to be able to utilize more than the practice chanter or practice set for six to nine months. So save the money and add on later. Again, if you have never played the Uilleann pipes, please do not start out with more than the practice set. These are very difficult to learn and the last thing you need to do is to complicate the learning process by buying more than you can play in the next six to nine months.

*The John Walsh Shuttle Pipes are similar in style and shape to the Shuttle Pipe which dates as far back as 1695. *The original Shuttle Pipe was bellows blown and had three open ended drones which were carried in one main stock with a plain open ended chanter made of ivory.
*The chanter was closed at some time during the eighteenth century and later keys were added to increase its note capacity. *Mounting the drones in a single stock was typical of the Old Irish or German Pipes. *The Shuttle Pipes are very affordable, require minimal upkeep and are generally “fun to play”. *They are very melodious and certainly an ideal instrument for practicing, as well as performing, by all levels of Highland Bagpipe players. *The Shuttle Pipe is crafted from rock maple, is mouth-blown and uses practice chanter reeds.
*The Shuttle Pipes are in the Key of "A" and are mouth blown with the fingering being the same as the Great Highland Bagpipe. *The pipe bag is made of synthetic material and the reeds are plastic. *The 3-Drone shuttle has the additional of a baritone drone. *The drones are tuned by moving the sliders back and forward down the shuttle section and can be turned off or on at anytime.

Getting yourself to that point takes more than a wee bit of time and a small pot o' gold too. But once there, you will be admired and your talents sought by friends, family and the public. Instead of the one octave range of the Great Highland Pipes, you are now being challenged to Master Two Octaves...thats a lot of notes! First Step: Learn the chanter. It is different than the GH chanter, takes a little getting used to. Most people jump into a Starter Set, also called a Practice Set. We offer a great African Blackwood Practice Set that comes with our incredible TradeUp price protection too. A Practice Set has a pipe bag, bellows and a chanter. The chanter bears no resemblance to the GH chanter. Work on this set until you are comfortable and can play a respectable number of tunes. If you can find an instructor, it would be good to do so before buying your Full Set. The Heather Clarke book and CD does go a long way towards getting you where you need to go, but a little personal instruction never hurts. Once you are adept with the Practice Set, it is time to consider the purchase of a full set. The full set of Ulliann Pipes has three drones, three regulators, which include three closed pipes...a bass, tenor and baritone. Same as the drones. The keys accompany the chanter and only make music when they are pressed. The Uilleann player must play the chanter while simultaneously working the bellows and the regulators. It takes practice and patience. The results are more than a little rewarding. |

I hope genuinely that you received my missive of some two days ago, on the Borus. They are positively the best pipes that I have ever heard, and I say that with some experience.
 It is only speculation as to the actual origin of the bagpipe. Hittite carvings depict that bagpipes existed in recognizeable form as long ago as 1,000 BC. The Hittites thrived in what is now Turkey. Given the trend of importing from the East, Bagpipes likely originated in Asia and were probably introduced into Europe by the Romans. Yes, there are Italian Bagpipes and we will be making them available to you later this year. By the time of the Middle Ages, bagpipes began to be associated with the military. The constant background music of the drones, coupled with the melodies streaming from the chanter, seemed to stir the libido and soon many armies, from the sub-continent, across the world, and back to Ireland, all had their own corps of 'Pipers. Bagpipe popularity suffered through the waves of Western music that began with the age of radio and accelerated with the dawn of television. Now, bagpipes are enjoying a true golden age. We seek to assure they continue as an important piece of our Celtic heritage.
