HAND MADE FOR YOU |
 |
|
MAKING THESE BY HAND TAKES TIME AND LOVE. HEIRLOOM QUALITY.Reeds:
Years of experience and thousands of hand-fashioned
reeds have proved to Michael that reed from California gives the most
satisfactory results for his pipes. Each set of pipes has 7 reeds --
each one hand cut, shaped and precision-tuned for the instrument.
After cutting and shaping two
pieces of reed, they are bound together with special thread.
Reeds are then placed in the pipe and tuned carefully.
Creating a chanter
Top quality African Blackwood is the material of
choice for chanter and regulator pipes. In these photos you
see Michael pre-drilling a block of wood in preparation for reaming the
internal bore. Because the unique sound and accurate tuning of the
uilleann pipes is partly dependent on the pipes having a conical bore,
the precise angle of the reaming tool is key to
this step. The sound of the pipe is directly affected by the size
and shape of the internal bore.
Once the bore is reamed to Michael's satisfaction,
he turns down the external size of the pipe, adding decorative ridges,
and notches for the fittings. The brass and imitation ivory
end-fittings are added, then the pipe goes back on the lathe again for
final touches.
Keys
Every brass key on a set of
pipes is cut and shaped by Michael to exactly fit the pipes for the best
possible sound. Here he is shaping a chanter key against a sanding block
on the lathe, then fitting a key to the chanter. The action, or
movement, of the keys is extremely important to the playability of the
pipes. Each key is tested and adjusted so the action is consistent
across the instrument.
Main Stock
The "main stock," usually made of
cocobolo/rosewood or braziallian mahogony, is the heart of the uilleann pipes, joining together
chanter, regulators and bellows. Five channels are bored
through the main stock to allow air to pass between the pipes and
bellows. Accurately boring these channels is very important.
Bellows and Bag
The bellows, used to inflate the bag,
take a lot of air pressure so must be constructed with durability in
mind. Traditional pipe-making techniques have adapted over the
years to incorporate modern materials that give much greater
durability. The internal bladder of both the bellows and bag are
flexible rubber and leather, that will not leak, dry out or crack with
continued use.
The outer structure of the bellows
is also leather with Irish elm paddles. Michael adds his artistic
signature to the paddles with a variety of Celtic knotwork.
Piping between bellows and bag is a
combination of flexible tubing and brass joints. They
are joined together with traditional blackwax for a leak-proof, durable seal.
Fittings
Imitation ivory fittings are all turned
on the lathe to achieve precise fit and decorative profile.

One
of the treasures of Irish traditional music, the Uilleann Pipes are a
wind-reed instrument that are only manufactured by hand. The word
"uilleann" is Irish Gaelic for "elbow." Unlike most other variations of
bagpipes, the Uilleann Pipes are inflated by means of a bellows,
operated by the elbow of one arm with the bag being held under the
other arm. The chanter is the main melody instrument and has a range of
two octaves. The drones, of which there are usually three -- base,
baritone and tenor -- when turned on, supply a continuous 'drone'
accompaniment to the melody. The regulators are keyed chanters, usually
three on a full set, which are operated by the musician when various
chords as accompaniment are required

Q and A:
Hi Dave:
To answer your question about buying your wife Uilleann
pipes.
The Uilleanns are the most difficult to learn...and most
expensive. Whenever I look at a full Uilleann set I marvel at the fact these
were invented many hundreds of years ago without the benefit of our
technology.
Never purchase a full set with the intention of learning on a
full set. About once a year someone will insist they are supremely talented and
will order a full set. Ultimately they have many silly problems and wind up
shutting down the system to just the "practice set" part of it, to wit: The
chanter, air bag and bellows.
This brings me to the basics of learning to
play the Uilleann Bag Pipe.
A full practice set is the chanter, air bag
and bellows. This allows you to learn the technique of using a bellows and the
intricacies of the Uilleann chanter. H J Clarke, at the age of 15, developed a
new technique for learning the Uilleann and she bases her book on the employment
of a practice set. You should figure 18 months of practice on that, give or take
6 months.
We have added some smaller and/or less expensive practice set
ups from Pipers' Choice. So now, in addition to our practice set (which comes
with a near 100% trade up allowance) and the Michael Vignoles' practice set, we
have 3 Pipers' Choice options:
1. Bare Bones. This is a Uilleann Chanter
made of polypenco adopted for mouth blowing directly into the chanter.
2.
Mouth blown air bad and Chanter.
3. Bellows blown air bag and Chanter
(full practice set). This practice set uses a slightly smaller bellows to fill
the air bag and power the chanter. Unlike our practice set and the Vignoles
practice set, this set uses polypenco.
So please consider one of the 5
practice options as they way to begin. There are lead times on shipping for all
of them.
The Pipers' Choice usually ship from between 21 and 30 days. We offer ours on the basis of our production schedule and we post anticipated delivery dates with the listing of our practice sets. The Vignoles practice set runs about 8
weeks.
Sincerely,
Donovan
