THIS SIMPLE STEP WILL ASSIST YOU IN ALWAYS KNOWING WHICH STRING AND WHICH KEY YOU ARE TUNING.

 THE CELTIC HARP THROUGH HISTORYBy the 1950’s, only a handful of musicians had even heard of a Celtic Harp. That situation has changed dramatically, yet few people are aware of this magical instrument’s significance to the Celtic legacy over the years, how it was nearly extinguished and how it has surged to a new prominence nobody could have predicted.
The Celtic Harp is intermixed with the very fabric of the Celtic people. While harps can be found in many forms, from Biblical times to current, harps, in modern times, have become most closely associated with the Celtic cultures of the Irish, Scots and Welsh. The Celtic Harp has long been intimately woven within the heart of Celtic culture, its myths and its legends. Harpers are veiled within the mists of Celtic history. Harpers were members of the druids and undertook a 21 year process of memorizing, not only Celtic music, but Celtic history too. Without written texts, the knowledge was passed from masters to students, orally. Harpers enjoyed a special place in society and were often the only source for knowledge not just of music, but of the law and Celtic traditions. The Romans came along and harpers, the druid class and oral traditions began to disappear. Slowly, over centuries, Celtic culture was almost erased. Then the English took aim at harpers. Queen Elizabeth I made it illegal for Welsh households to keep a harper. Things got really bad when Cromwell took over the crown. In Ireland, he smashed and burned all harps…and the harpers too! The harpers who could, fled to Europe, where they were much better received. By the late 1600’s, to be a harper, was pretty much reserved for the blind, as a way of making a livelihood as travelling entertainers! Shortly after the time of Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738), the Celtic harp seemed destined to oblivion…replaced by pedal harps/orchestral harps. Much of the music was lost as well. In the late 19th Century, a revival of Celtic cultures began to take a toe-hold among high society. Irish poets and authors, like W.B. Yeats and Padraic Colum became part of the driving force behind a rapidly evolving British literary and musical culture, further fueling a return of Celtic traditions…and the Celtic Harp. It was necessary to bring the Celtic harps in from the continent, which were something of a hybrid between the original Celtic harp and concert harps, but at least they were making a comeback. Unfortunately, it was a short-lived comeback. It has only been in the last few decades that harps, similar to those played by the ancient Celts, have re-emerged. The modern Celtic Harp (aka “Clarsach”) has enjoyed rapid acceptance and ever-growing popularity. Harpists, such as Alison Kinnaird, Sue Richards, Victoria Lynn Schulz, Kim Robertson and Loreena McKennitt have pushed the modern Celtic Harp to the forefront of the Celtic music scene. Now, it is more likely than not, that a new harpist will choose the Celtic Harp as their first choice. The Celtic Harp is back! |

Celtic Style Harps
The Celtic Style Harps feature a mahogany plywood soundboard for additional strength and excellent tonal quality. The soundboards have a five year warranty from the manufacturer, not from Celtic Renaissance Music. The manufacturer also warrants the frames for one year. Early Music Shop of England Harps are the Round Back Harps and carry the same warranty.
The Lily Harp can produce a limited number of songs. It only has one octave and makes an excellent decoration or table center piece.
The Baby Harp is our smallest, fully functional harp. It is perfect for a child, with adult supervision, and can be played by accomplished harpists as well. You can listen to a sound sample.
Heather Harps are very popular with novice harp players. They are about three feet tall with 3 octaves of range. They also feature sharpening levers, which greatly broadens the number of songs that can be played.
The Minstrel Harp is a good choice for the more advanced player, or a person with piano or stringed instrument backround. At 38 inches tall, it addresses four octaves and is also levered.
The Meghan Harp is for your more advanced player. Again, if the would-be harpist is adept at Piano or Violin, they can more easily learn this wonderful harp and would not be over-whelmed. This wonderful Harp is 51 inches tall and makes for an amazing center of conversation too.
