Tuning a Tunable Bodhran
Whether you have an outside tunable bodhran, as pictured, or an inside tunable bodhran, here are some tuning hints.
There are eight lugs for tuning. You tighten or loosen them to create higher or deeper sounds, respectively. But you do not start with one lug and then proceed in a circular pattern until you have "gone around the clock"! This tuning process is similar to tightening lug nuts on an automobile's wheels. If you tighten them all in a row, rather than by criss-crossing, the wheel on your car will be crooked and wear unevenly and handle even worse.
Tighten down one lug, then cross over to the opposite side of the bodhran and tighten that lug. Do not tighten to the point where you begin to hear the nasty sound of wood cracking. Tighten a little and when you have done all eight (8) lugs, check your sound. If you like it, leave it, and if not, then either loosen the lugs to deepen the sound or tighten further.

We ship these in a de-tuned condition, meaning the tightening bolts are loose and the goatskin is not stretched. This prevents damage to the goatskin, as well as avoids putting unnecessary stress on the instrument during shipping.

We include a light weight, carrying case, a tipper and Michael's excellent DVD too! Dual, fixed cross-braces are combined with a beautiful, laminated Rosewood construction for a dramatic visual effect and which produces a deep, rich sound. The goat-skin cover is held in place by tuning bolts concealed within the frame, which also are used to tune the instrument. We ship these de-tuned to prevent damage to the head. The three tippers which are dual color, are standard. The remaining seven tippers vary and are drawn from the assortment of 20 tippers we carry. A tipper for every sound you want to create.

Remember...we do not ship any products, including bodhrans, already tuned. When you tune your bodhran for the first time, start by tightening the screws by the opposite companion screw. Thus, partly tighten the screw at the 3 O'clock position, then the screw at the 9 O'clock position. Then do the 12o'Clock and the 6 O'clock, until you have tightened all of them a little bit. Then proceed to finish tuning.
Goatskin heads are a product of nature. They vary in color and texture. Some parts may even be a bit transparent. Others heads might look almost uniform, though unlikley. Some models have whitewashed goatskin heads, mostly Michael Vignoles models. Part of what makes a bodhran look authentic is the obvious nature that the head is natural. We do Not sell bodhrans with Synthetic heads. Synthetic heads do not sound as good and they look manufactured.
Goatskin is the most expensive choice for the head and the most suitable choice too. Variations in both texture and thickness allow differences in tone across the playing surface which produces desireable effects. Plastic heads cannot do that. Avoid plastic or synthetic bodhran heads at all costs!

7" long x 7/8" wide, with a slight curve to these ebony bones. The dense Blackwood results in a clear tone when struck. Hold one between the thumb and index, or between the index and middle fingers, so the flat side is between the fingers and it curves toward you. This first bone should hang down along your inner wrist so it does not swing freely. The second bone is held between the middle and ring fingers with the flat side between the fingers and the convex curve facing the convex curve of the first bone. Let it hang down along your inner palm and swing freely. To play, shake your hand and swing your wrist. The bones will clap against each other in a variety of rhythms. Lots of fun!
