QUESTION ABOUT STARTING A YOUNG PIPER
Practice chanters are just that: For Practicing.
If you are new to piping then you MUST learn with a Practice Chanter.
Our less expensive practice chanters are intended for a person brand new to bagpipes to begin with.
Expect to spend numerous months practicing on your chanter (any chanter) before
it sounds like anything better than bleating goats being swung to and fro
by a burly Scotsman.
Playing the bagpipes is not easy, so save the cost of a full set of pipes, only
to discover you don't have the dedication to learn how to play them. Always begin with the practice chanter.
We have great starter practice chanter sets that include everything you need.
Dear John and Mira:
Our personal pipemaker for those sets went out of business and we have not been able to replace his production with a suitable quality product.
Small Pipes are what you are actually interested in. We have a page dedicated to Small Pipes.
They are smaller, easier to learn, easier to play and not so loud.
HOWEVER, we must tell you that pipers learn on the practice chanter, not on the full pipes, not even the small pipes...at least not for a good six months.
We have excellent starter sets of practice chanters with DVD's and/or Instruction books with CD's.
The DVD we import from London is the best we have seen and is really critical with youngsters who are more likely to respond to a video than to a book.
In Six months, or so, if the piping is coming along, then it would be time for a set of pipes.
Trying to learn the chanter, three drones and keeping the airbag full is difficult, which is an understatement.
This is a product code for a comprehensive learning set up: GL-PCK1-DVD
Here is a page link with all of our learning kits: http://www.celticrenaissancemusic.com/bagpipe-accessories-chanters
I know people who have insisted on spending 8 or 900 dollars on a good, basic set for a new piper.
The set either winds up being resold because the child gets frustrated, or put aside for six months while they learn on the practice chanter.
So, please, unless you have lots of money, get started with a learning set up and buy the pipes next year.
Sincerely,
Marcus

*Korg TM-40 - The Digital Tuner That Lets You Practice Pitch and Rhythm at the Same Time!
*When Korg introduced a digital metronome tuner to the world, the extremely high accuracy and superb features made it a favorite among musicians from every genre.
*The new Korg TM-40 is a digital metronome that combines the accuracy and advanced features of Korg's world-famous music products into a single, compact and easy-to-use unit.
*Revolutionary Features:
*A great lesson and practice tool, the TM-40 offers both tuner and metronome functions that can be used simultaneously or independently.
*A large LCD-type needle delivers both the accuracy of an LCD and excellent visibility of a needle indicator.
*The metronome tuner also has LED indicators that show pitch deviation or blink to indicate the tempo, making the TM-40 a great visual too.
*Sound Out!
In addition to the visual tuning guide provided by the meter, you can use the TM-40's built-in speaker to produce a tuning reference pitch (Sound Out).
This is convenient for tuning by ear and is useful for ear training.
By pressing the Sound switch, you can select the reference pitch from A5 to B4 (commonly used as the tuning standard for wind instruments).
Moreover, by holding down the Sound switch, you can select a mode in which you step through chromatic pitches from C4 to C5 (one octave).
Adjustable Calibration
The TM-40's Calibration setting is adjustable in a range of 410~480 Hz to accommodate a variety of tuning standards.
The calibration can be adjusted in 1 Hz steps, letting you accurately tune to any song or key.
Memory backup is also provided so that the Calibration and Sound Out ("12 NOTES" or "ABb") settings are remembered even when the power is turned off. Ships in about 7 business days.
